Finalmente cruzei o Atlântico!! Depois umas longas 17 horas de viagem, cheguei a Monterrey (norte do México), onde no dia 12 de Junho fiz a estreia do Concerto para Violino e Orquestra de Freitas Branco.

Uma obra que tenho apresentado diversas vezes em Portugal e Espanha e a qual gravei em Abril passado com a Orquestra do Norte.

Um programa onde a versatilidade foi posta à prova, executei obras de música de câmara, líder (com imensos solos) e solista. O concerto foi transmitido em directo pela Antena 2.

How wonderful to have someone like Igor Stravinsky composing a work to commemorate your wedding anniversary and how even more fabulous to have someone like Wagner composing a birthday present like Siegfried Idyll! Stravinsky's Dumbarton Oaks is a delightfully tongue in cheek classical pastiche full of the composer's unmistakable thumbprints; those inimitable brassy staccatos, quirky woodwind passages set in a delightful take of baroque form. As successful and original as Prokofiev's Classical Symphony, this work deserves to be played more often. A more rhythmic stylishness and a couple of weaknesses in intonation in the open passages could have improved the overall effect which was otherwise delightful.

The Siegfried Idyll usually wafts me to sleep; especially when it is performed a la Karajan in a way that attempts to squeeze out every available drop of lyricism. The result is usually so therapeutic that no matter how beautiful initially, the sheer length of the work transforms it into a soporific. I was at first taken aback by the pace at which Beltran led the orchestra and then rather enjoyed it. The andante pace as opposed to the adagio, gave a more vigorous but nonetheless aesthetically emotional melodiousness to this very well known if reputedly verbose work. For the first time I actually listened to the idyll from start to finish without making any obvious effort to prevent my mind wandering which in my book is a definite plus point.

When a reviewer is faced with the challenge of assessing a new work the whole raison d'etre for being a critic becomes all that much more meaningful. Who cares what a critic may write about Haydn and Beethoven let alone Stravinsky and Wagner; all of whom have been acknowledged masters for a century and more. Today, many are those who question the role of a critic; and with good reason. It is an extremely debatable point; one that, I for one, am unable to answer because there are so many pros and cons that arriving at the kind of solution that our all so literal and pragmatic cyberworld demands is impossible.

What enables me to give an opinion about a mint new violin concerto? Nothing very much; apart from the fact that I may be relatively better informed and more perceptive than the average audience. Even there, in today's IT-dominated world, the amount of knowledge available to all is so colossal that the critic is basically a more sensitive and articulate member of the audience whose thinking-cap dominates emotional sallies into the unknown and forever seeks logical and comprehensible solutions to present to his readers. That is how I see it.

Karl Fiorini's Violin Concerto with the dedicatee as soloist was primarily yet another proof that contemporary music can be emotional, lyrical and coherent.

The question is whether I would wish to listen to Mr Fiorini's concerto again; a question to which I unhesitatingly reply, yes, definitely. There is plenty of material in the concerto that moved me; the rich and sometimes startling score, the poignant desolation of the adagio passages, the lilting scherzo-like rhythms and the rich harmonics. There was also a need to be more concise; possibly a little pruning to cut some of the repeats, or near clone-like passages, may improve the overall effect and enable the lyrical solo declamations that merge dramatically with the orchestral score remain mysteriously ephemeral instead of overworking them.

From the square-dancing Calibans to ostinato rhythms that reminded me of Louise Bourgeois's Spiders, what really hallmarks the concerto is the intense and molten lyricism of the solo violin score played spectacularly by Emanuel Salvador to whom Mr Fiorini dedicates the work. Salvador performed this work with great pathos and conviction projecting the most dissonant and spaced out tonal passages into sheer lyricism.

Today, works by composers like Lauridsen, Glass, Adams, Wallfisch, Andriessen and Vine, to mention but a few, are slowly but surely shifting popular perception of "contemporary" to the comprehensibly emotional and intellectual planes that determine all good music; in fact I will expand that to all good art. At the end of the day, it is Time and the Listener who will determine whether a work can and will survive or not; a nd that, despite us critics, is the truest test of all!

Apart from that, it was great to see again everyone from the ensemble even if only for a couple hours. I had to rush to London for a few rehearsals for the 19th June recital at the Gaia International Music Festival with Annie Yim!

Fiorini´s Concerto: Portuguese Premiere done, Maltese premiered next week

Last Friday was the Portuguese premiere of Fiorini´s Concerto in Porto. After this concert with Orquestra do Norte and Maestro Federico Garcia Vigil, follows the Maltese premiere on the 29th in Teatro Manuel in sunny Malta again with the Rotterdam Young Ensemble and Roberto Beltran.

Below is the article that came out in Independent of Malta to publicize this year´s International String Orchestra Festival.

International String Orchestra festival in late April

As part of the International String Orchestra Festival, the Vodafone Malta Foundation presents the Rotterdam Young Ensemble who will perform two concerts in Malta one on Sunday 27 April and the other on Tuesday 29 April. This festival is organised in collaboration with the Dutch Embassy.

On Sunday 27 April, the concert is going to be held at the St Augustine’s church in Victoria Gozo, featuring music by Bach, Haydn, and Mozart. On Tuesday 29 April, the concert will take place at the Manoel Theatre and the program will include compositions by Haydn, Stravinsky, Wagner, and artistic director Karl Fiorini’s violin concerto featuring Emanuel Salvador as soloist.

The latter work also forms part of a project by the same soloist who has performed the concerto in The Netherlands, Portugal and Malta with coming performances in Italy, Uruguay and the UK. The concert at the Manoel Theatre will also include a new premier for 12 strings by a young contemporary composer who has won the International Composition Competition. The composer will be commissioned to write another work for strings for the Festival in 2009. For this competition, over 50 entries have been received from Austria, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Latvia, The Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, Spain, UK and USA.

Born in 1981, Emanuel Salvador has already performed as a soloist and chamber musician in many important venues including St. Martin-in-the-Fields and Southwark Cathedral (London), Philharmonic Hall (Uralsk – Kazakhstan), Gulbenkian Museum, Rivoli Theatre and Bank of Portugal Hall (Lisbon), Príncipe Filipe Hall (Oviedo, Spain), Centro de las Artes Escénicas y de la Música (Salamanca, Spain), Sto. António Church (Rome) and Manoel Theatre (Malta). He has been awarded several prizes such as: first prize at Isolde Menges (RCM) and Beckenham Festival competitions; Barbirolli Memorial and Wolfson Foundation Award; second prize at Jovens Músicos competition; Honours Mention at Júlio Cardona International Competition - Portugal; Gulbenkian Foundation Scholarship (2000-2003), among others.

The Rotterdam Young Ensemble (RYE) consists of 26 talented young artists from seven different nationalities. Since its foundation in 2005, the RYE reached a wide variety of styles aiming to achieve the highest level and faithful interpretations of music from the baroque period to our days. Paying special attention on the music of our times, the RYE has given world premiers by young composers from The Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Japan, Korea and Mexico.

Both events start at 19:30. The 27 April at the St. Augustine’s Church, Gozo is free for the general public whilst tickets for the 29 April concert at the Manoel Theatre are being sold at e20, e15 and e10 with a 50% discount for students on the presentation of a valid student card. Nascido em Guimarães em 1981, Emanuel Salvador conta com importantes apresentações como solista e recitalista em conceituadas salas de concerto em Inglaterra (St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Southwark Cathedral), Cazaquistão (Philharmonic Hall), México, Holanda, Portugal (Centro Cultural de Belém e Auditório 2 da Gulbenkian), Alemanha (Palatin Wiesloch, Fruchthalle Kaiserslautern), Polónia, Espanha (Centro de Artes Escénicas - Salamanca), Itália e Malta (Teatro Manoel).

Foi distinguido com diversos prémios em concursos nacionais e internacionais, tais como 1º prémio nos concursos Isolde Menges (RCM) e Beckenham Festival; Barbirolli Memorial e Wolfson Foundation award; 2º prémio no Concurso Prémio Jovens Músicos (nível médio); 1ª Menção Honrosa no Concurso Internacional Júlio Cardona, entre outros. Foi bolseiro da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian de 2000 a 2003 e em 2008 e 2009 do Instituto Camões.

António Church (Rome), Palatin Kulturzentrum and Fruchthalle (Germany) and Manoel Theatre (Malta).

In 1999 Emanuel graduated from Artave (a specialist music school) as the best student of the year. During this time he studied with Costa Santos, Sergei Aroutiounian and Yakow Marr. He then moved to London, where he got a Bachelor of Music Degree from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (studying with Professor John Glickman) and a Master’s Degree in Advanced Performance at the Royal College of Music, where he studied with Dr. Felix Andrievsky. Other professors with whom Emanuel studied include Ulf Hoelscher, Alberto Lysy, Vadim Brodsky, David Takeno, Gerardo Ribeiro and Ilya Grubert.

As a concerto soloist Emanuel has played with Artave, do Norte, Clássica da Madeira, Sinfonica UANL, Camara de Morelos, Bialystok, Opole, Kalisz and Lublin Philharmonics, Nonesuch, Morley College, Vitalis, Rotterdam Ensemble, Skolia, Newbury Symphony and Nova Amadeus orchestras, under Ferreira Lobo, Vítor Matos, Roberto Beltran, Boguslaw Dawidow, Felix Carrasco, Federico Garcia Vigil, Chris Dawe, David Drummond, Volker Schmidt-Gertenbach and Massimo Scapin. His festival appearances include Gaia International, Encontros da Primavera, Gaia and O violino por… (Portugal), Proms in St. Judes and Ampthill (U.K.) and at the International String Orchestra Festival (Malta). Some of his performances have been recorded for the Portuguese Radio and Khabar TV (Kazakhstan).

The Violin Concerto by Joaquim dos Santos, was written for, and premiered by Emanuel in Italy and Portugal. The recording of the premiere was released in 2005. Karl Fiorini´s Violin Concerto, also written for Emanuel, was premiered in Rotterdam, Portugal and Malta in 2008.

Emanuel is an active chamber musician and has studied in masterclasses with Bernard Greenhouse (Beaux Arts), Florestan and Peabody trios and the Borodin, Takacs and Vellinger Quartets. He was a founder member of the Vianna da Motta Piano Trio, with whom he performed extensively in the U.K. and Portugal and recorded a CD for Centro Atlântico label. In 2003, he formed a violin and harp Duo with Ieuan Jones, playing regularly in the U.K.

Since September 2005 Emanuel is the leader of Orquestra do Norte in Portugal. In June 2006 he played second solo violin in Gulbenkian Foundation’s project Uma Pequena Flauta Mágica (Lisbon) and in 2009 guest lead the Seoul Classical Players (South Korea).

He plays on a tonal copy of a Guarnerius del Gesu, by Martin Schleske (Munich, 2004), which he acquired with the help of a Loan Fund for Musical Instruments’ grant.
